Month's SuperSlow Star: John Griffes
John Griffes, a hospital CEO,
has been a SuperSlow®
participant since March 30th. John has five
children and many demands on his time.
The two 30 minute SuperSlow®
sessions a week were easily worked into his schedule
without taking time away from his family.
In the three months March -
July 2004, he has lost twenty-one pounds
and three- percent body fat! By the end of
August, he had lost a total of 30lbs.
His original pant size of a
forty-inch waist has shrunk to a baggy thirty-six waist!
Before signing up for the four month SuperSlow®
program, John suffered with GERDS, hiaital hernia pain,
moderately high cholesterol levels (248), occasional
migraine headaches and was drinking nearly 8 cups of coffee
per day. Realizing his symptoms have nearly ceased, John
attributes the Omega Zone diet and SuperSlow®
sessions to the weight loss and the healthier eating habits.
John now enjoys a higher
quality of uninterrupted sleep, greater energy levels and
his concentration has improved (His cholesterol level has
been reduced (208) and he is only drinking one cup of
decaffeinated coffee per day.)
John says that it is the
best he has felt in 15 years. He and his family are
enjoying a new John from the inside out!
Congratulations John for your
success and new healthy lifestyle!!

Christian's Update on The 6 Components of Optimal Health and
Aging
Part
1 "Making the Decision To Make Your Health a Priority"
This is the first of several articles about my
thoughts about the important things we need to consider if we are to life long, healthy
and productive lives. This article will consider the
question: Why we don’t take better care of ourselves?
During the past 25 years that I have been a surgeon, I
have always been amazed at how uncommon it is to meet a person who truly has
made the lifestyle commitments needed to achieve Optimal Health and maintain
peak mental and physical performance.
I have usually been involved with patients at
late stages of various diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancer and lung
diseases. When I look at their medical history, it is usually very easy, in
retrospect, to see that most of them made very bad lifestyle choices along the
way. Sometimes the choices were made because of lack of knowledge of the bad
health effects of certain habits. For most however, the health risks of these
habits were well known.
So, Why don’t we take better care of these
bodies that are capable of giving us such pleasure if we only take care of them?
Unlike mechanical things, our bodies have
constant repair mechanisms which are very efficient at keeping us healthy. Why
don’t we develop even the simple habits which we know are good for us?
I think the reason is based on a lack of self
respect, self esteem, call it self love. If we truly valued ourselves as unique
and wonderful creations, capable of living extraordinary and productive lives we
would act differently.
One of my favorite books is written by Og Mandino,
a well known motivational author. The book is entitled
“The Greatest Secret in
the World”.
In the first part of the book he asks us to look
at our world and find things around us that are lovable. You can love the rain,
the sun, the old, the ugly, the poor and he writes, “ …. most of all I will
love myself. For when I do I will zealously inspect all things which enter my
body, my mind, my soul and my heart. “
That’s it. It is that simple. Value yourself,
love your self. You are worth it. Make your health a priority. The Staff
of Inside Outside has made their decision and we stand ready to help you when
you make yours. This newsletter is part of their dream to help you with your
quest for Optimal Health.
Everything in life starts
with a decision.
Optimal Health is just a
decision away!! Don't delay, Make it today.
One of the characteristics of
a unfulfilled life is we tend to think that "today is not an important
critical day."

Confused
about Protein? Dawn Does Aminos!
Why Protein, Why Me, Why Now?
Hippocrates once said “Let your food be
medicine, and let your medicine be food”. When we think of
a medicine, most westerners have the mentality that a doctor
prescribes medicine in order to preserve or enhance the
quality of life. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all had the
same attitude of Hippocrates toward food? Of course he had
great choices available: fish, olives, fruits and
vegetables, and whole grains. There was no fast food to
distract him. None the less, Hippocrates, and modern day
man, have a commonality: intelligence, and choices. Choices
are based on useful information. It is useful information
that protein is one of the foundational building blocks of
the body. Several of the building blocks of proteins are
amino acids, and several amino acids are considered
“essential.” Amino acids and proteins are essential in the
sense that they are an indispensable part of ones diet. But
what role does protein take in our daily lives, and how much
of it does one actually need? Due to the media, opinions on
the proper forms of protein have become distorted. This is
where the question “why” becomes incredibly imperative.
Protein, when looked at in the literal
definition from the glossary, is considered as “basic
elements of all animal and vegetable tissues. Biological
substances such as hormones and enzymes also are composed of
protein. The body makes the specific proteins it needs for
growth, repair, and other functions from amino acids that
are either extracted from dietary protein, or are
manufactured from other amino acids.” Essential means
something is indispensable. Therefore, protein is enormously
imperative. Yes, all helpful background information, but
what is a protein in terms of shopping or ordering at the
restaurant?
Protein builds muscles, helps immune
function, it provides the body with energy, and is needed
for the manufacture of hormones, antibodies, enzymes, and
tissues. Protein does the body well, we agree, but still, we
ask, what is a protein?! The desire to be a President
Kennedy speech deliverer and,” ask not what protein can do
for me but what I can do to make protein useful to me.”
I have watched protein made useful, and
individuals made it useful to themselves. Since I have
been associated with Inside Outside Wellness Center as the
staff nutritionist, I have developed a conviction about
protein. The conviction has evolved by watching our clients
take big helping of useful information, in particular when it
comes to protein. Those who are successful at building
muscle and losing fat are the ones who supplement with
protein. Further, they include a quality protein with every
meal and snack, and balance the protein with a favorable
carbohydrate and favorable fat.
Dr. Barry Sears says a carbohydrate comes
from the ground, and a protein moves around. In other
words, fish, chicken, beef, are the things that move around,
so they are proteins. And they eat the things from the
ground. So, these animals have made life easier for us.
They have ingested, and stored away the things from the
ground. Therefore, protein is in the interest of
efficiency.
Knowing that protein helps manufacture
hormones, and tissues, no wonder grandma said her pot roast
would put hair on your chest! (skip the mashed potatoes).
Maybe she should have said her pot roast would help build
those muscles on your chest! The choice is yours. Go, and
eat those things that used to move around. Balance it out
with those things that come from the ground. Let your
medicine be food and let your food be medicine. Your energy
level and muscles will thank you. And maybe even grandma, or
even Hippocrates!

Antonini, Our Newest Certified SuperSlow® Instructor
Marrying at a very young age, I established
life goals to revolve around being the perfect wife for a
very ambitious spouse and being the perfect Mom. After 17
years of everyone else’s needs being my primary focus, I
found myself emotionally and physically drained. To
complicate matters even more, I had begun using food and a
couch-potato lifestyle to comfort a body that had been
suffering from a lifetime of neglect. Luckily, I realized
what I was doing and decided to counteract this
“Carbohydrate Coma” I was in. (I called my state the Carb
Coma because I ate so many carbs and I was ALWAYS tired!)
I was tired of being tired!!!! I decided to
make changes!
Make changes I did….I signed up with a program that is very
similar to what we specialize in here at Inside Outside. It
was a program that focused on strength training, supplements
and balanced nutrition. For the first time in my life, I
began to see real results. I lost weight, but more
importantly, I lost about 9% in body fat and went from a
size 8/10 to a size 2/4! These components also made a hugh
impact on my energy level, my strength, my mental & physical
health and the icing on the cake, my body’s shape
transformed as well (You can see the difference in my
pictures)! I’ll never go back to my old way of living!
If I can do it—so can you!!! I am a true
example that if you apply these components, you will see
results! Remember that we get out, what we put in!!! I
wish you great success with your program and am here to help
you in any way that I can!

SuperSlow® Technique Corner
Our
many clients at Inside Outside have always had a love hate
relationship with the SuperSlow®
Leg Press. One reason is because since the Leg Press is a
compound movement, your buttocks (Gluteus), quadriceps, and
hamstrings get a major workout, and our clients really feel
the burn. The burn is a good thing because it means that the
muscles are working extremely hard and they are going to
fatigue, which is what we want them to do. Another
reason clients feel the burn so quickly on the leg press is
because the quadriceps are very sensitive to pain, whereas
the Gluteus is not very sensitive to pain.
As you
know, we don't allow you to lock the knees out on the Leg
Press. There are two reasons we don't allow you to
lock out the knees. The first reason has to do with
Exercise. When the legs are locked out, the bones are
supporting everything and the muscles are relaxing so there
is No Exercise. The second reason has to do with
Safety. Many people have one leg that is
slightly longer than the other. If they were to
straighten their legs when pushing on the Leg Press, the
shorter leg will inevitably straighten before the other leg,
your pelvis will twist and you will hurt your back.
The motion
of the leg press is quite simple, but there are some things
myself and the instructors at Inside Outside want you to
keep in mind. When starting the pushing motion of the
Leg Press start slowly, don't fire out of the bottom, and
control the weight on the negative phase. SuperSlow®
isn't called SuperSlow®
for no reason! On your third repetition,
remember to do a static contraction (Squeeze) against the
Plate at the top while tightening your leg muscles as tight
as possible for three seconds. And remember to breathe
throughout the repetition especially on the Squeeze!!

on Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is the most natural way to
safely exfoliate the skin with little or no downtime.
Microdermabrasion works with little micronized crystals
derived from minerals. These crystals are used to abrade
the skin, removing dead and flaking skin cells. The
procedure can be performed on all skin types, especially if
you are looking to minimize the appearance of fine lines,
pigmentation problems, dull, lifeless, uneven skin tones and
damaged skin. Even if you don’t have any of these problems
Microdermabrasion can still help maintain that beautiful
skin.
The number of treatments a person needs
depends on the size, depth and type of skin. A series of
six is usually recommended followed by a maintenance
program. By doing a routine like this you will see a
dramatic change in the overall appearance of the skin.
We all want to look and feel healthy and our
skin plays an important role toward achieving this goal. So
now that summer is almost over and winter is approaching it
is the perfect time to start saying goodbye to that aging
skin, and treat yourself and your skin to all the wonderful
benefits of microdermabrasion.
